Four Paths to U.S. Citizenship Through Naturalization

There are four primary paths to U.S. citizenship through naturalization:

  • You have been a permanent resident for at least 5 years and meet all other eligibility requirements.
  • You have been a permanent resident for at least 3 years and meet all eligibility requirements to apply as the spouse of a U.S. citizen.
  • You served in the U.S. armed forces and meet eligibility requirements to apply for citizenship under qualifying military service.
  • You are a U.S. citizen and have a child that was born out of the U.S. and is currently residing outside of the U.S., and other eligibility requirements are met.

No matter the path you take, San Jose naturalization lawyer Yemi Getachew and the rest of our team can provide the compassionate support and experienced counsel you need.

U.S. Citizenship Test

There are several steps to take to complete your application for applying for naturalization. The naturalization test is one of these steps, which tests your ability to speak, write and read English, as well as test your knowledge of U.S. government and history. Here are some things you can expect from these meetings.

Language Test

You will be asked to perform an English proficiency test which will determine if you can take part in the social and economical aspects of life in the United States without a language barrier or much difficulty. The test has 3 components:

  • Reading: The USCIS agent may ask you to read some sections of Form N-400, Application for Naturalization out loud.

  • Writing: You may be tasked with writing a couple of simple sentences.

  • Speaking: The agent will ask you questions about yourself that you will have to answer as clearly as possible during the interview.

Is English a requirement for U.S. Citizenship?

Being fluent in English is not a requirement for U.S. citizenship, but you must be able to prove that you are proficient enough to interact with others without having too hard of a time. If you are weary of the upcoming test, English as a Second Language course can assist you in preparation for your interview and exam.

Civics Test

You will also be asked to perform a civics test that will determine your knowledge and basic understanding of U.S. government functioning and history. This section of the test might be waived if you have a mental condition that impedes your ability to comprehend relevant information. Additionally, you may also be dismissed from the exam if you are over the age of 65 or have been living in the U.S. for more than 20 years.

The test itself is pretty straightforward, focusing on the function of the government, significant dates and some history questions about the U.S., how elections occur and how government officials are appointed. The U.S Customs and Immigration Services provide study material to assist your preparation for the test.
